A New Lease on Death, by Olivia Blacke, is the first in her Supernatural Mysteries series. I have read a lot of cozies that contain supernatural elements, especially either a ghost detective or companion detective. I was pleasantly surprised to find Olivia Blacke managed to find a spin on it that was entirely new, at least to me. Two main characters star in A New Lease on Death and switch perspective every few chapters or so. Our living detective is Ruby Young, an optimistic new tenant of a cheap and fully furnished apartment in Boston. Our ghost is the apartment’s previous tenant, Cordelia Graves. Cordelia does not remember the details of her death, or really why she is hanging around as a ghostly entity, but she is not pleased that Ruby has moved in and is systematically murdering all of her beloved plants. Ruby is blissfully unaware of Cordelia for the most part, just curious why her light bulbs keep dying and her electronics often go on the fritz. What puts these two on a collision course is the death of their neighbor Jack Macintyre, who is shot outside of their apartment and left alone in a blizzard for someone to call the police. read more

Daryl Wood Gerber is the author the fantastic cozy series, The Fairy Garden Mysteries, and now she’s branching out with a new series, the Literary Dining mysteries. The debut is Murder on the Page, and follows English teacher turned caterer, Allie Catt. Appropriately, she also has a cat, who is not an alley cat and has the very dignified name of Darcy. Allie and her catering company, known as Dream Cuisine, are in Bramblewood, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Now for the coolest part about Dream Cuisine: it specializes in parties based on their client’s favorite books – combining love of food and love of books in a creative and fun way that has business booming. read more

Elise Bryant: It’s Elementary

If the mystery part of this novel hadn’t meandered a bit as it headed in for the finish it would have been the absolutely perfect summer read.  The rest of the book, though, is so utterly charming, that’s really a nitpick.  This is the first adult novel for author Bryant, who up until now has written YA romance, and she seems to be embracing adulting in her first outing.  Her heroine, Mavis Miller, is a single mom who lives with her Dad and is late getting her adorable daughter Pearl to school just about every day in the rush of getting ready for work, making Pearl’s lunch, letting the dog out, etc. read more

Off the Air is Christina Estes’ first mystery novel and follows reporter Jolene Garcia, a TV reporter in Phoenix, Arizona. Jolene covers everything from puff pieces to in depth breaking news. She tries to hold onto her integrity to not reveal her sources, and to not publish information that isn’t verified and confirmed, despite the fact that other reporters around her have no qualms of just running with any crumb they’re given. read more

Kat Ailes: The Expectant Detectives

This charmingly goofy, messy, funny mystery follows a very pregnant Alice and her partner Joe as they forsake the busy (and expensive) chaos of London for “the country.”  They’ve chosen the tiny village of Penton in the Cotswolds on the theory that a “posh hippy” community will be a good fit.  They bring along their gorgeous, if stupid, dog, Helen, who makes the moving trip to Penton extra nightmarish by vomiting all over the car.

They jam their things into their cute, tiny rental cottage, sleeping on an air mattress.  Alice and Joe seem to have mixed feelings on their upcoming blessed arrival and make a stab at joining their new community (and reality) by attending a pre-natal class, where they meet other pregnant mums in the vicinity. read more

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Kathleen Kalb’s.  The fact that her maiden name was actually Marple might be reason enough to love her, but she’s also an incredibly adept and enjoyable cozy writer.  She kicked off her career with an historical fiction series featuring an opera singer, but she’s written various cozies, one based on her actual profession (radio host), one featuring a secret hit woman, and this latest one featuring historical society head and antiques expert Christian Shaw. read more
