Lucille never leaves her house, never lets anyone inside, is always excited for a new book, and is always ready for tea and a chat with Nora. Unfortunately, one day the book delivery turns dark when Nora finds Lucille dead at the bottom of her stairs, amongst a hoard of books that would overwhelm even the most dedicated bibliophile. Paranormal cozies are tricky things because the author has to balance a mystery that is solvable by the very corporeal detectives, while working in elements of myth and legend that often provide incorporeal clues. Darci Hannah starts off a new series with A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor. At first, I wasn’t sure when the paranormal was going to play in, as the main character Bridget “Bunny” MacBride is a chef on a cooking show under the main host. She is then offered a new contract where she will be the primary chef on a series that will be called Food & Spirits. Now, Bunny made one rather large mistake when accepting this particular job – she didn’t explore the contract thoroughly before signing. If she had, she might have seen that the ‘Spirit’ part of the show was not referring to beverages but to the dearly departed. Her main role is to be preparing meals to attract sprits to the table. Needless to say, she was far from pleased with that turn of events, but decides to stick with her contract and make the best of it. She keeps her fingers crossed that nothing spooky happens to her. read more

Even at Christmas they make sure to blend the two holidays, and make good of use of the movie Nightmare Before Christmas. All the shops have fun spooky themed names such as the Lazy Bones Bookshop, which Bailey has taken over from her grandparents. Her mother had her at a very young age, so Bailey was actually raised by her grandparents and she still lives with her Grandpa. Chaos at the Lazy Bones Bookshop has the town kicking off its spooky season with the Lit Festival. Aiming to take full advantage of the festival, Bailey has several fun events planned for her store including some visiting authors, one of which can cite Elya Hollow as his childhood home. As if enough isn’t going on, a TV show known as Gone Ghouls is also coming around to film a few episodes, the star of which also has roots in Elya Hollow. It starts off as a book of celebrations and homecoming, everyone excited for the events to come. read more

Given her own social media fame, Maddy’s responses to Brandy’s provocations have to be very carefully considered to avoid backlash. Although getting murdered in Maddy’s bakery Baby Cakes, making Maddy the chief suspect, probably was not the kind of trouble Brandy had in mind. While Trooper Bob is more than happy to lay the crime at her feet, Maddy has plenty of friends who are ready to rally and help her figure out who else could have done it, and English Mastiff Baby to keep her safe. read more
