Best of 2025

Best of the year lists are so difficult!  I’ve given myself leeway to divide books into categories – cozy, historical, best all around – giving me a chance to spotlight more great reads.  All of the reviews appear either on this website or over at Deadly Pleasures (or both).  Deadly Pleasures also features my pared down top 10 list.  Here are 30 great reads culled from the 100 or so books I read each year.  My standard is simple – a book that stays with me long after I finish it, great writing, great characters.  There are veterans and newbies here.  Dive in! read more

Cara Hunter: Making a Killing

DI Adam Fawley #7

If you haven’t read the first book in this series, Close to Home, please, read no further.  Instead, go find a copy, and get as hooked on DI Adam Fawley as I am.  Then, get caught up (it will only take a couple of days, I guarantee it) and dive into this one.  Fawley is a detective in Oxford, England, and author Hunter supplies a character list at the beginning of each book, golden age style.  It is helpful, as there are a lot of characters, and while the police characters are important, in Hunter’s universe, story is all.  So pull up a seat. read more

Cara Hunter: The Whole Truth

DI Adam Fawley #5

This popular UK series is being released in chunks stateside.  With the release of The Whole Truth, books 3 through 5 are now available.  If the rest of them are anything like this one, sign me up – if Harlan Coben wrote a police series it might be something like this insanely readable and provoking book.  Hunter, in golden age style, provides a precis of the characters at the beginning to aid the reader coming late to the series in getting up to speed. It remained a helpful reference as I sorted characters mentally. read more
