\"\"<\/a>Nearly twenty books in, accomplished pro Hank Phillippi Ryan can keep you entertained, squeeze your heart, make you cry, give you a bit of a scare and make the whole darn thing look easy.\u00a0 But this one achieves just a little bit more, with the characters so beautifully delineated, and the family tensions and problems that gives the plot its legs so poignant, that the book had me aching to actually reach into the pages and help the compelling characters in some way.<\/p>\n

Ryan always has a great set up – here Eliza is caring for niece Piper for a week while her sister Bea takes some time away from it all after a divorce. The problems start when the day comes for Bea to collect Piper and she doesn\u2019t show up. At first the family rationalizes that Bea must have gotten the wrong day. The following day is the annual family \u201cremembrance day,\u201d when Eliza, Bea and Piper go to the cemetery to visit the grave of Eliza and Bea\u2019s parents, who died in a plane crash many years back. Since they know Bea packed an appropriate remembrance day dress, they conclude Bea must mean to meet them there, so they head over the next morning, but, again she\u2019s a no show.<\/p>\n

While exploring Bea\u2019s and Piper\u2019s house, the burglar alarm goes off, summoning the police. They discover someone has changed the alarm code, kicking off an escalating string of worrisome events, and in this fraught moment we enter Eliza\u2019s head as her concern cascades for Bea, and, most of all, Piper, who is already struggling to cope without her mom.\u00a0 Eliza begins to fear the worst, trying to keep the situation from becoming too much for a stressed eleven-year-old, even as her boss keeps pinging her, wondering what is going on.\u00a0 They ultimately end up with said boss eating a much-delayed dinner and figuring out their next steps.<\/p>\n

To give any more away about this beautifully constructed plot, one in which one element organically unfolds into the next, would do the reader a disservice.\u00a0 Long ago a dear writer friend, Barbara D\u2019Amato, told me she loved Agatha Christie, because \u201cshe\u2019s so organic.\u201d\u00a0 It took me many years of reading to understand her exact meaning, but in a nutshell, it\u2019s this \u2013\u00a0 the plot must unfold like life, with events that surprise us but nevertheless emerge logically from the past.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just suggest readers pay close attention, because canny pro Ryan doesn\u2019t let details drop without a reason, which often only becomes apparent in admiring hindsight.<\/p>\n

The reveals can astonish, but, as I said, they grow organically from plot and character, as Ryan has prepared a trail and it\u2019s only after the surprise that the reader realizes they\u2019ve been set up by a master.\u00a0 A combination of barrelling thriller, expert mystery and moving story, Mother Daughter Sister Stranger<\/em> had me grabbing for Kleenex at the end.\u00a0 It\u2019s a high bar, but I found it to definitely be one of Ryan\u2019s strongest books.\u00a0\u00a0— Robin Agnew<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
