{"id":713,"date":"2012-08-29T22:52:04","date_gmt":"2012-08-30T04:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/?p=713"},"modified":"2012-08-29T22:52:04","modified_gmt":"2012-08-30T04:52:04","slug":"william-kent-krueger-vermilion-drift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/william-kent-krueger-vermilion-drift\/","title":{"rendered":"William Kent Krueger: Vermilion Drift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/vermiliondrift.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-714\" title=\"vermiliondrift\" src=\"\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/vermiliondrift.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"83\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>William Kent Krueger\u2019s streak is intact \u2013 this is another wonderful book in his Cork O\u2019Connor series, one which picks up with the recently widowed Cork attempting to move forward in his life.\u00a0 While last year\u2019s\u00a0<em>Heaven\u2019s Keep<\/em> felt like an elegy, this one is all rocket powered story telling, with Krueger utilizing his well developed trademark gifts: setting, character, and story.<\/p>\n<p>The Vermilion Drift is part of an old iron mine, one the federal government is studying for use as a nuclear waste site.\u00a0 As you might imagine, this has stirred up some fervent activism in tiny Aurora, Minnesota, especially among the Native American community.\u00a0 When Cork is hired as part of the security detail, lots of the natives see the half Ojibwe Cork as a turncoat.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the security detail, Cork has also been hired by Max Cavanaugh, owner of the working mines in the county, to search for his missing sister, a free spirit named Lauren.\u00a0 Lauren had run an art center and artist\u2019s colony in town.<\/p>\n<p>When Cork goes along to check out the mine shaft \u2013 there\u2019s been a security breach (some threatening graffiti) \u2013 he and the geologists and other officials find not only graffiti, but an old stash of bodies.\u00a0 One of them, fresher than the others, appears to be the body of the missing Lauren Cavanaugh.\u00a0 The older stash appears to be tied to the \u201cVanishings\u201d \u2013 long ago disappearances of young women from the reservation and town, one of them Cork\u2019s cousin Fern.\u00a0 As Cork begins to unravel both the secrets behind Lauren\u2019s death and the ones behind the older bodies, he uncovers more than he bargained for.<\/p>\n<p>His old friend Henry Meloux, guarded by an unfriendly niece who has come to town to take care of him, is being especially cryptic with Cork and it\u2019s causing him lots of frustration.\u00a0 When the gun that killed not only Lauren Cavanaugh but one of the girls proves to be Cork\u2019s father\u2019s old gun, one Cork himself had used and put away, things get even more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>The ties to Cork\u2019s family and to the Native community go very deep, and Cork is forced to examine his own parent\u2019s marriage and re-examine the feelings he thought he had for his father.\u00a0 Meanwhile, he\u2019s trying to adjust to life as a widower, one whose children are also scattered, starting their own lives.\u00a0 One of the most moving passages describes Cork\u2019s desk \u2013 the desk that had belonged to, and been restored by, his dead wife.\u00a0 It\u2019s lightly done but it\u2019s very affecting.<\/p>\n<p>As always Krueger manages to combine suspense, complicated storytelling and real psychological depth in the portrayals of his characters.\u00a0 This book is another in a long and unbroken line of excellence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Kent Krueger\u2019s streak is intact \u2013 this is another wonderful book in his Cork O\u2019Connor series, one which picks up with the recently widowed Cork attempting to move forward in his life.\u00a0 While last year\u2019s\u00a0Heaven\u2019s Keep felt like an elegy, this one is all rocket powered story telling, with Krueger utilizing his well developed &#8230;
