Other than selling shells in a lovely island location, Maureen also is part of a mystery solving team with her landlords and friends Glady and Burt Weaver. The two siblings are always ready to bring a flare of theatrics and drama to every investigation, and just everyday life on the island. The final member of their team is an eighteenth-century Welsh pirate, Emrys Lloyd. Only Maureen can hear and see Emrys.

Maureen and Emrys have fallen into a routine at the Moon Shell shop. He claims it as his ship to patrol and protect as best an incorporeal being can, and Maureen interacts with the public and sells the shells she loves. Emrys also has discovered that with enough concentration and focus he can physically affect things in the world around him, like the little pen and journal Maureen provided him. Despite their peaceful coexistence, there is always the risk of it being found out that he exists or that Maureen is in her shop claiming to talk to ghosts. She worries specifically about local island doctor and pest, Irving Allred, who is convinced he can see omens of death and is fixated on the ideas of the supernatural, the afterlife, and ghosts. Luckily his attention moves on from the possibility of Emrys to focus on his own possible ghost acquisition through buying a reportedly haunted sword.

His joy is short lived when a tourist, with a friendly little bulldog, arrives in Maureen’s shop with the sword in question, with fresh blood on the blade. Maureen isn’t a fool; she calls the sheriff’s department and together they all go to investigate where the sword had been found, finding a body when they investigate. With one of her friends a suspect, and a genuine concern that Dr. Allred had finally lost his mind, Marueen and company launch their own investigation. She is certain Dr. Allred isn’t wrong about the sword being haunted, given a new visitor to the shop that once again only she can see. With Glady and Burt’s imaginations and knowledge of the island combined with Maureen’s levelheaded reason and deductive logic the truth will out.

All Shell Breaks Loose is a great addition to the Haunted Shell Shop series, and I recommend it for those who read the previous books in the series. For those who are new to Maureen’s adventures, All Shell Breaks Loose can be enjoyed on its own thanks to Molly MacRae’s writing style, and she sets the scene, characters, and atmosphere in a clear and hospitable layout for new readers. However, I do think readers will enjoy Emrys’ story and development a bit more having read the previous books. It also would provide a bit more context into Maureen’s history with the island, the shop, and Emrys himself. Anyone who enjoys a cozy with an island setting, a pragmatic and level headed detective, and plenty of ghostly hijinks will love the Haunted Shell Shop series. I, personally, cannot wait to see what adventures await Maureen and what else Emrys will get up to with his developing spectral skills. – Carla Schantz

Haunted Shell Shop #3 In Molly MacRae’s Haunted Shell Shop series, Maureen Nash runs the Moon Shell shop on Carolina’s Ocracoke Island.
