She’s working at her mother’s bookstore, Island Books, and is dating a childhood friend, Dalton, who works on the ferry. Things are looking up from the absolute dumpster fire that her life had become when her ex-fiancé broke off their engagement and went on their honeymoon with one of her bridesmaids. Quite a way for her life to fall apart, but she got to go home again and found a place to live renting from her aunt and working at the bookstore for her mother. She’s also begun to write, thanks to encouragement from her job working for the famous, yet reclusive, author Lilly Aster.

Her desire to become a better writer has her joining the Bainbridge writing group. It seems a great place to gain some confidence and learn from fellow writers, including Lee Anderson, freelance food critic. Lee is excited to meet Meg and invites her out to the Local Crab to talk about writing and act as cover for his next restaurant review. But when they get there, not a lot of writing talk happens, and Lee has a bit of a personality change on Meg, clearly setting up the Local Crab for a terrible review, complaining about everything, and being extremely rude. It’s all far beyond the pale, and Meg ditches. That was hopefully the end of it, but when Lee is found dead not long after their aborted dinner, Meg and the island’s restaurant are all suspects. Meg and the Mystery Crew, including her boyfriend Dalton, put their heads together to clear the local restaurant and Meg herself of suspicion. Meanwhile, Meg gets a bit of a bombshell from her mother that puts the Gates family into a little bit of a tizzy.

Those who read the first Bainbridge Island Mystery will be delighted with Lynn Cahoon’s second addition to the series. Meg is a delightful protagonist who is just doing her best to rebuild her life and figure out where she is going, like so many are. Her dog Watson is ready to help out by endearing her to strangers and giving her an opening for a friendly, informative chat. She is smart and methodical, and having an uncle as the police chief doesn’t hurt her sleuthing either. Those who haven’t read the first book in the series can enjoy Meg’s adventures in Confessions of an Amateur Sleuth without having read the first. Lynn Cahoon describes settings and characters effectively and gives some background into what was covered in the previous book. Although I cannot recommend reading the first one enough, Lynn Cahoon has consistently delivered entertaining and engaging mysteries with a protagonist one can’t help but root for and want to hear more from. I, personally, cannot wait to see what adventures await Meg, and how her writing dreams progress. – Carla Schantz

Bainbridge Island #2 In Lynn Cahoon’s second Bainbridge Island mystery, Meg Gates has taken to island life, being embraced as one of the locals rather than a tourist.
