Hank Phillippi Ryan\u2019s smart, fun thriller set in the world of Boston news \u2013 a world she is very familiar with, as it\u2019s one she\u2019s worked in for decades \u2013 will have you flipping the pages faster and faster as you get to the twisty end.\u00a0 Her central character, Jane Ryland, a former television reporter, has left her TV station in disgrace as she\u2019s been on the losing end of a million dollar lawsuit, one where she\u2019s refused to reveal a source.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Jane is starting over as a print reporter at the fictional Boston Register.<\/em> While she\u2019s adjusting to the fact that she doesn\u2019t have to look great all the time like an on air reporter does (a positive) she\u2019s also adjusting to the fact that she\u2019s often digging in her bag for her own camera as, unlike an on air reporter, she has no following camera-person (a negative).\u00a0 Also she has to share a desk with the mysterious and elusive Tuck (another negative). Her first assignment is the seemingly simple and uncomplicated task of getting an interview with Owen Lassister\u2019s wife, who seems to be MIA.\u00a0 Lassiter is running for the senate.<\/p>\n

While Jane tries unsuccessfully to get past the wife\u2019s press secretary, she\u2019s more than startled when the woman herself calls to ask to speak to her \u201coff the record\u201d.\u00a0 Lassiter\u2019s wife, Moira, is a trim, lovely, proper Bostonian type who lets Jane know that she\u2019s sure there\u2019s \u201canother woman\u201d and she\u2019s not going to stand for it.\u00a0 She\u2019s asking Jane, with her reporter\u2019s skills, to find out what\u2019s going on. Jane\u2019s desire to get involved in another high profile, \u201coff the record\u201d story is about nil, but she\u2019s drawn into the story anyway as things accelerate in all kinds of ways.<\/p>\n

This is a story with several threads, and like a Harlan Coben novel, they are all ultimately related, though, also like a Coben novel, you\u2019re never sure quite how until the end of the book.\u00a0 Ryan also shares Coben\u2019s brisk storytelling style as she relates her complicated thriller with an assured voice that won\u2019t leave the reader confused, but rather wanting to turn the pages.<\/p>\n

Jane is attracted to, but not in a relationship with, a cop, who is on the case of the so-called \u201cBridge Killer\u201d though he\u2019s sure it\u2019s nothing of the sort.\u00a0 When one of the Bridge Killer\u2019s victims turns out to be Jane\u2019s unrevealed source, things really get complicated.\u00a0 While in one way things look bad for Jane, you have a feeling it\u2019s all going to work out.\u00a0 In a way the thriller is the most optimistic of mystery formats, as the central character must (almost always) take a positive and proactive approach to get to the bottom of things.\u00a0 As it happens, this suits Ryan\u2019s storytelling style down to the ground.\u00a0 I\u2019m already looking forward to the next installment of Jane Ryland\u2019s life story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
