{"id":4864,"date":"2023-02-27T05:32:33","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T13:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/?p=4864"},"modified":"2023-02-27T05:32:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T13:32:33","slug":"cara-black-night-flight-to-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/cara-black-night-flight-to-paris\/","title":{"rendered":"Cara Black: Night Flight to Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/night-flight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4865 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/night-flight-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/night-flight-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/night-flight.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The second novel from Cara Black featuring WWII sniper\/assassin Kate Rees is just as nail-bitingly difficult to put down as the first book.\u00a0 Kate is getting her mojo back in Scotland, training recruits, when she\u2019s whisked to London to renew her spycraft skills and get a new assignment.\u00a0 She\u2019s given specific instructions, but little information.\u00a0 She\u2019s to be sent to Paris with some penicillin, kill a target, extract an operative and return \u2013 within two days.\u00a0 Black gives the reader the full treatment on every step of Kate\u2019s journey, so you are with her on the bumpy flight to Paris, the landing in a field, and her exhaustion as the finds her way to the city to begin her mission.<\/p>\n<p>The book is full of twists, and Kate is never sure who she can trust.\u00a0 Things go wrong, her informers are not who she imagined they would be, and her extraction target is difficult to locate.\u00a0 She feels she owes the woman her life and is on this mission mostly because she feels she owes her this debt.\u00a0 As Kate is figuring out how to deliver the penicillin as well as the best way to take out her target \u2013 a high up Nazi official \u2013 Black also weaves in bits of Kate\u2019s backstory.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d grown up on a farm with brothers, learning to shoot early.\u00a0 When she meets and marries her husband, only to lose him and her baby to a Nazi bomb, her mission to find and kill as many Nazis as she can is cemented.\u00a0 In this novel, it\u2019s also tested, as she\u2019s pushed to the limit of her ingenuity, courage, and energy.\u00a0 She makes up for lack of sleep by popping a Dexedrine every so often.<\/p>\n<p>Never the less, she fulfills her mission, only to be left behind on the airstrip and told to report to a new mission in Cairo.\u00a0 The difference between Cairo and occupied Paris is striking \u2013 mostly because of attitude.\u00a0 In Paris, there\u2019s resignation, as well as an underground resistance.\u00a0 In Cairo, the dread of Rommel and his troops swooping in to take the city is ever present, though the city seems to have a more languid air in general, perhaps because of the heat.<\/p>\n<p>Kate is assigned a new target and when she\u2019s dropped off, she\u2019s reminded she\u2019s expendable.\u00a0 This book is filled with beautifully written action set pieces, and the ones in Cairo are especially well done and original.\u00a0 I have read many, many books about WWII, but Black manages to make her subject fresh, and to give the reader a new take on the war by using a different point of view.<\/p>\n<p>Kate also struggles throughout with double and even triple agents, making it very difficult to know who to trust.\u00a0 Her training has told her to trust no one and that seems to be her modus operandi, though she obviously has to trust different people throughout the book.\u00a0 The spycraft details are also quite interesting, tiny things I\u2019d never heard or thought of.\u00a0 It makes the book both more specific and more memorable.\u00a0 This was a great read, impossible to put down. &#8212;
