{"id":3511,"date":"2019-12-20T07:06:27","date_gmt":"2019-12-20T15:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2019-12-20T10:26:31","modified_gmt":"2019-12-20T18:26:31","slug":"emily-littlejohn-shatter-the-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/emily-littlejohn-shatter-the-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Emily Littlejohn: Shatter the Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3513 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-674x1024.jpg 674w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-768x1168.jpg 768w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-1010x1536.jpg 1010w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night-1347x2048.jpg 1347w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shatter-the-night.jpg 1684w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a>I am smitten with this series, now four books in.\u00a0 Slight spoiler:\u00a0 Detective Gemma Monroe is planning her wedding to Brody, father of baby Grace.\u00a0 This is more or less background, however, as Gemma deals with a car bombing that takes place in the first chapter.\u00a0 Set during Halloween, this novel is atmospheric and embraces the fear inherent in Halloween, rather than the cute ghostie trick or treating aspect of this now huge holiday.\u00a0 Littlejohn goes back to the root: scary things that go bump in the night.\u00a0 In this case, literally, an explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma\u2019s small Colorado town is filled with family history as well as kin connections.\u00a0 In this, this series has much in common with Margaret Maron\u2019s Deborah Knott series, it\u2019s just the northern version.\u00a0 Gemma was raised by her grandparents after the death of her parents, and they are now ageing \u2013 her grandmother has dementia \u2013 and the caretaking has flipped.\u00a0 The man who is killed was a close friend of Gemma\u2019s grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Littlejohn then knits more threads into her narrative.\u00a0 There\u2019s a new theater in town, rehabbed by the mayor and her husband with her money and they are opening, quite naturally for a mystery novel, with a production of <em>Macbeth.\u00a0 <\/em>The theater is being plagued by small but horrible acts of vandalism that threaten to hold up opening night \u2013 though the director claims that will happen over his dead body.\u00a0 Gemma is investigating these crimes and is unsure if they are tied to the larger ones taking place.<\/p>\n<p>After the car bombing, there\u2019s another horrific murder, and the whys of what is happening puzzle the detectives, but legwork on the art of an eager intern (actually named Jimmy, which will make virtually any reader of a certain age reference Jimmy Olsen of Superman fame) points them in the right direction.\u00a0 The background of the case is horrifying, as horrifying as the events in the present.<\/p>\n<p>Littlejohn is wonderful at atmosphere and her prose is often so gorgeous I find myself dogearing pages as I read, to note quotes for later.\u00a0 With Gemma, she\u2019s created a solid central character \u2013 a decent human being who is struggling with family issues, caring for a newborn, and young enough to be figuring out where she fits in the universe.\u00a0 She is also a great storyteller, terrific at pacing and character development.\u00a0 These books are often practically a one sit read for me.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution to this book was heartbreaking as well as solidly foregrounded.\u00a0 I appreciated everything about it and could not recommend this series more highly, though you should do yourself the reading favor of starting with the first one, <em>Inherit the Bones.<\/em>\u00a0 I promise you\u2019ll be hooked.<\/p>\n<p><em>This book should appeal to fans of Margaret Maron, Julia Spencer-Fleming, Julia Keller, Ellen Hart, and Jane Haddam.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am smitten with this series, now four books in.\u00a0 Slight spoiler:\u00a0 Detective Gemma Monroe is planning her wedding to Brody, father of baby Grace.\u00a0 This is more or less background, however, as Gemma deals with a car bombing that takes place in the first chapter.\u00a0 Set during Halloween, this novel is atmospheric and embraces &#8230;
