Skunks loose in the choir loft a few days before Christmas, a missing boa constrictor &#8211; do I need to say more?\u00a0 Donna Andrews at her witty best, which is saying a LOT.<\/p>\n<p><em>The 12 Clues of Christmas<\/em>, Rhys Bowen (2012).\u00a0 The body count is high as Lady Georgie hosts a holiday party in tiny Tiddleton-under-Lovey. While Bowen herself denies any resemblance to\u00a0<em>And Then There Were None,<\/em> there are really far fewer people in Tiddleton by the end of the book than there were at the beginning &#8211; and the deaths are so creative! Delightfully, Bowen includes a guide of English Christmas traditions at the end.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who Killed the Curate?\u00a0<\/em>Joan Coggin (1944).\u00a0 Always a favorite of mine, Christmas or no, hilariously fey Lady Loops marries a vicar, to everyone&#8217;s surprise, and manages to solve the curate&#8217;s death and be an unexpectedly excellent vicar&#8217;s wife at the same time.\u00a0 Dry British humor on full display.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hercule Poirot&#8217;s Christmas,\u00a0<\/em>Agatha Christie (1938).\u00a0 Duh!\u00a0 Who wouldn&#8217;t include this one? The family patriarch is killed on Christmas Eve and luckily Poirot is staying in the village.\u00a0 As yummy a Poirot novel as can be imagined.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/jerusalem-inn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2855 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/jerusalem-inn-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/jerusalem-inn-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/jerusalem-inn.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a>Jerusalem Inn,\u00a0<\/em>Martha Grimes (1984).\u00a0 While I stopped looking forward to Martha Grimes novels awhile ago, at her peak &#8211; with her first 10 or so books &#8211; she was one of the best.\u00a0 In this installment, Inspector Jury finds a dead woman in the snow, and\u00a0finds ties to a run down pub as well as a fancy house party.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/haddam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2854 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/haddam-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/haddam-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/haddam.jpg 328w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/><\/a>Not a Creature was Stirring,<\/em> Jane Haddam (1990).\u00a0 Haddam&#8217;s first Gregor Demarkian novel and one of her best.\u00a0 In this one former FBI agent Gregor meets his future wife Bennis as he tries to figure out who keeps knocking off her family members in the family&#8217;s isolated mansion.\u00a0 Nice combination of smarts and plot.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/a-fatal-winter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2856 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/a-fatal-winter-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/a-fatal-winter-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/a-fatal-winter.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 114px) 100vw, 114px\" \/><\/a>A Fatal Winter,\u00a0<\/em>G.M. Malliet (2012).\u00a0 Malliet&#8217;s vicar Max Tudor is asked to a Christmas party by Lord Footrustle (need I say more?\u00a0 One of the best ever names in mystery fiction).\u00a0 Lord F. is dispatched as are several more of his guests, and former MI5 agent Max is on the case.\u00a0 The novel is bookended by Max&#8217;s growing romance with the lovely Awena, and ends at a village Christmas party.<\/p>\n<p><em>Corpus Christmas,\u00a0<\/em>Margaret Maron (1989).\u00a0 Margaret Maron has written many wonderful novels and a few that are perfect, and this is one of them.\u00a0 Her straight laced Detective, NYPD Lt. Sigrid Harald, investigates a murder at the Erich Bruel house, a museum in Gramercy Park.\u00a0 One of the best plotters in the biz, this book is no exception and the whole novel is like the lovely tone of a crystal bell, sharp and perfect.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tied-up-in-tinsel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2860 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tied-up-in-tinsel-184x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tied-up-in-tinsel-184x300.jpg 184w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tied-up-in-tinsel.jpg 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a>Tied up in Tinsel,\u00a0<\/em>Ngaio Marsh (1972).\u00a0 A favorite Marsh title, Inspector Alleyn&#8217;s artist wife Troy is on her own as she paints a famous retired actor at his far flung castle.\u00a0 Rude pranks and a murder get Inspector Alleyn on the case, with Troy&#8217;s letters to Alleyn providing the crucial clue. Typical Marsh: sharp social observation, tight plot, lovely prose, and wonderful characters.<\/p>\n<p><em>Murder at the Old Vicarage,\u00a0<\/em>Jill McGown (1988).\u00a0 McGown takes Christie&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Murder at the Vicarage\u00a0<\/em>and puts her own spin on it, as her series hero Chief Inspector Lloyd finds that domestic vicarage murder involves much more than he had imagined.\u00a0 Even worse, the village is shut off by snow.\u00a0 This is far less cozy than Christie, but equally compelling.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/in-the-bleak-midwinter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2853 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/in-the-bleak-midwinter-181x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/in-the-bleak-midwinter-181x300.jpg 181w, https:\/\/auntagathas.com\/aa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/in-the-bleak-midwinter.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 114px) 100vw, 114px\" \/><\/a>In the Bleak Midwinter,\u00a0<\/em>Julia Spencer Fleming (2002).\u00a0 One of the best debut novels ever.\u00a0 Rev. Claire Fergusson meets police Chief Russ Van Alstyne when she discovers a baby on the steps of her Episcopal church. The setting &#8211; Miller&#8217;s Kill, New York, the chemistry between Claire and Russ as they argue faith and logic, the terrific plot, and the immense amount of heart that powers this story make it a classic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Duck the Halls, Donna Andrews (2013).
